A newly identified spinosaur from Niger may represent one of the most intriguing sail-backed predators of the Late Cretaceous. Nicknamed the “Scimitar Spino” for its blade-shaped head crest, Spinosaurus mirabilis offers a fresh look at how diverse these semi-aquatic hunters may have been.

To understand why this matters, we need to look at its more famous relative.

What is Spinosaurus Aegipticus (If you didn’t know)

The well-known Spinosaurus aegyptiacus was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs ever discovered, possibly weighing between seven and ten metric tons. For years it was imagined as a towering, upright super-predator, especially after its appearance in Jurassic Park III.

Modern research paints a very different picture. Instead of standing tall like a traditional theropod, it likely had a low, forward-leaning posture. Its paddle-like tail suggests strong swimming ability, and its long snout filled with conical teeth was perfectly designed for catching fish. Rather than dominating open plains, it may have spent much of its life in and around rivers.

Its famous sail, rising dramatically from its back, may have helped regulate body temperature or served as a display structure to attract mates and intimidate rivals.

The New Genus: Spinosaurus Mirabilis

Discovered in the Far Rock Formation of Niger, Spinosaurus mirabilis lived during the Late Cretaceous in a lush river system teeming with life. At around four metric tons as an adult, it was smaller than Spinosaurus aegyptiacus but still a formidable predator.

Its fossils were found alongside sawfish such as Onchopristis, turtles, crocodilians, an unidentified abelisaurid, and remains of Carcharodontosaurus. This paints a vivid picture of a competitive ecosystem where rivers were highways of both opportunity and danger.

The Sword-Like Crest

What truly sets S. mirabilis apart is the thick, scimitar-shaped crest running along its skull. Unlike the sail on its back, this crest sits prominently on the head, and it varies noticeably between individuals. Three known specimens show differences in crest shape, suggesting individual variation, possible sexual dimorphism, or age-related changes.

The crest was likely covered in keratin, meaning it may have been brightly colored in life. In a dense river environment, such a structure could have played a major role in visual communication — signaling strength, maturity, or readiness to mate.

A Specialist of the Shallows

Like its larger cousin, Spinosaurus mirabilis was probably a semi-aquatic hunter. It may have waded through shallow waters about 1.5 meters deep, using quick, snapping bites to seize fish. Its interlocking conical teeth would have been ideal for gripping slippery prey.

Given its close relationship to S. aegyptiacus, it likely retained the ability to hunt small to medium-sized terrestrial animals when needed. But the rivers were probably its true domain.

Why It Matters

If Spinosaurus mirabilis represents a distinct genus, it suggests that spinosaur diversity in North and West Africa was greater than previously thought. Instead of a single giant species dominating the waterways, multiple specialized forms may have coexisted, each adapted to slightly different ecological niches.

The Age of Dinosaurs is far from fully understood. Every new discovery reminds us that evolution experiments in ways we are only beginning to uncover.
